Choosing the Right Size Cello
As with all instruments from the string family, choosing the right size Cello is important. A Cello that is too small or too large for its user will be more difficult to play. Cello choices are usually determined based on age, height or body length.
...o 1/4 size Cello: typically suited to 5 to 7 year-olds, below 4 feet in height and with a waist of around 20 to 23 inches.
...o 1/2 size Cello: for 7 to 11 year-olds between 4 and 4 1/2 feet tall with a waist of approximately 26 to 27.5 inches.
...o 3/4 size Cello: for the 11 to 15 age bracket, usually between 4 1/2 feet and 5 feet in height with a waist of approximately 27 to 30 inches.
...o 4/4 or Full size Cello: for adults and those taller than 5 feet, with a waist of 30 inches or more.
